NOTE: you will need a state or federal photo ID to enter this building and NO BACKPACKS or 2 strap bags are allowed; a briefcase, purse, or laptop bag is allowed.

A call to action

Dear Colleagues,

Governor John Kasich has unveiled his final budget bill as Governor.  The proposal, House Bill 49 contains a board consolidation provision.  OCA, along with other professional associations, were able to effectively work against this proposal becoming law during 2016.

But we need your help again!

A provision of HB 49 would eliminate 11 licensing boards, including the OCSWMFT Board, bringing them together under consolidated boards.  OCA is strongly opposed to this legislation, as are many other mental and behavioral health organizations.

Under the proposal, counselors would be licensed by a newly created State Behavioral Health and Social Work Board.  This new board would be composed of:

  • 1 Psychologist;
  • 1 School Psychologist;
  • 1 Chemical Dependency counselor;
  • 1 Prevention Specialist;
  • 1 Professional Clinical Counselor;
  • 2 Independent Social Workers;
  • 1 Independent Marriage and Family Therapist;
  • 1 member of the public.

The current board structure is 100% supported by license fees.  No tax dollars are saved by the proposed consolidation.  It is critical that members with in depth knowledge of the profession serve on the board to make licensing and disciplinary judgments.

Please, friends, we need your voices to be heard loud and clear by our legislators that we oppose this!  I am asking you to contact your legislators directly and as soon as possible to express your concerns about this. If you don’t know who your legislators are, you can find that here using your zip code: LINK TO THE OHIO LEGISLATURE

We are planning on having representation at a hearing on March 8th to present testimony on this proposal, but we also need your voice speaking to make sure we’re heard.  So, please, write, call, and/or email your representatives and the Governor’s office.  If you need main talking points, please contact me, Amanda Sines at Government Advantage Group, or Matt Fullen, our Government Relations Chair.

Please also spread the word among colleagues who may not be involved in the OCA.  This impacts virtually every mental health, school counseling professional, psychologist, social worker, and chemical dependency counselor in the state, and we need all of our voices to be heard directly and firmly by our legislators.

Thanks you for your attention to this and for your work in the profession.
